Now you can Finally have your cake…. and… learn about it.
As Julia Childs famously said “A party without a cake is just a a meeting”. It almost like having a party is the perfect excuse for Champagne and cakes. If you know I mean. But WHY do we celebrate birthdays with cake? And who thought it would be a good idea to stick flaming candles on top?
One theory I found is that the Greeks would make round cakes to honour Artemis, the goddess of the moon. The lit candles on the cake represented the glow of the moon and the smoke from the candles carried their prayers and wishes to the gods who lived in the skies….. If this isn’t creativity…
Then during the Middle Ages, the tasty cakes that we all know now would only have been for the wealthy. (Life is never fair – so they say) But thanks to the Industrial Revolution, sugar and other ingredients needed to bake a cake like sugar and flour were finally made available to all.
But here’s something that many will want to know:
A birthday cake is more than a way to celebrate a birthday; it can predict the future! In some tradition, the number of candles left lit after you blow on them determines how many years you have until you get married! So go easy on the candles….. turn around, face your relatives and “the cake says so!” You are welcome.
